Sunday was a big night for the music industry and music fans. The 2018 Billboard Awards ceremony was held in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel. There were great performances by John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato, and many more. Janet Jackson was presented with the Billboard Icon Award and also performed some of her greatest hits.
Kelly Clarkson was the host and began the award ceremony by honoring the recent shooting victims at Santa Fe High School in Texas. The recognition of tragedy continued as The Chainsmokers; Alex Pall and Drew Taggart; walked on the stage with Halsey to present the Top Hot 100 Song of 2018. As the audience grew silent, the three singers shared a sentimental and thoughtful moment for their friend and collaborator, Avicii.
Avicii recently lost his life after battling a mental health issue. Drew gave an unscripted honor to the Swedish DJ and music producer, by telling the audience that Avicii inspired The Chainsmokers to do EDM music and said that he meant a lot to the duo group. Haley echoed the statements by saying in part, “Everyone who worked with [Avicii] would say that he was such a joy…” Halsey went on to encourage the viewing audience to support family and friends that are suffering from mental illness and to love them.
Luis Fonsi was given the Award for Top Hot 100 Song of 2018, for the hit song “Despacito.” The song was a hit crossover single for Latin music and pop culture.
Alex and Drew returned to the stage later in the evening to accept the Award for Top Dance/Electronic. It is the first time that the Billboard Awards has recognized an artist for the combined category. During the acceptance speech, they both shared the award with Avicii, with an emotional Drew stating, “We want to dedicate this award to Avicii. He is someone who made us believe that this is something we could do with our lives. [He] inspired all of us and influenced our music and influence pop music in general.” The two of them never spoke about producers, agents or managers during the heartfelt speech, which was very notable.
The Chainsmokers are currently working on their second studio album, which will be titled “Somebody.”
Hussain Sajwani, DAMAC Owner and founder of the DAMAC Group, is best known for his bombastic personality, his sometimes, over the top publicity stunts for his real estate properties, and the often seemingly extravagant lifestyles of the Hussain Sajwani family. There is another side to this man however.
Sajwani is a man who came from humble beginnings and the DAMAC Group, of which he serves as Chairman and CEO, did as well. In his almost spartan like offices, he puts pride of place not to photos of him with his rich and powerful friends and associates, not to awards and accolades that he has earned in the world of global businesses and finance, and not even to the Quran of which he is an avid reader. Instead, he has a simple, cheap plaque presented to him by the United States Army, which reads “in recognition and gratitude for Excellence in Food Service Operations during Operation Desert Storm.” He takes great pride in this simple token of gratitude. He says that it keeps him grounded and inspires others that out of humble beginnings, great things can form.
With that idea in mind, he is also a man who commits great amounts of time and financial assistance to a wide variety of charitable organizations and humanitarian aid groups. Just recently, Sajwani donated AED 2M to a group that provides clothing to needy children all over the world. The donation will help to cloth more than one million kids around the world. He also gives a great deal of money to other groups which help to combat poverty, HIV, Cancer, and war strife in countries all over the Middle East and Africa.
The man who is famous for his high-rise luxury developments, and the building of ultra-exclusive golf courses with billionaire global real estate tycoon and US President Donald J. Trump, is also interested in building a better world. He is a developer of some of the most glamourous and glitzy properties in Dubai, but in his heart, he is a man who wants to develop better lives for those who are the most in need.
